I’m lucky to get Christmas Day three times a year: once like everyone else, and twice when I head off to Bubble, the tradeshow for children’s clothing, design and accessories. It’s always so exciting to catch up with our suppliers and see what they have in store for future seasons, and also try and work out which of the fabulous brands we want to add to our collection at DaisychainBaby.co.uk. This time around I had a helping hand, having flicked through CWB magazine in advance and catching sight of the most unique baby shoes I have seen in a long time. On seeing them in the flesh at Bubble I knew they’d be perfect: great quality, good value and recycled packaging to boot! Here founder Catherine gives a bit of background behind her latest baby:
Poco Nido is an exciting inspirational little brand for little people founded in August 2011 by Catherine Lobley. They offer limited edition, British designed baby footwear and t-shirts. Their debut season features eye catching, stimulating graphics, safely hand printed with water-based inks. The mini shoes are made from cotton and leather and are beautifully packaged in a recycled card tube box, which also cleverly doubles as a postal tube, meaning less packing waste.
Catherine graduated from Cordwainers Collage, London 14 years ago and up until last year has spent her footwear career designing, developing and selling for brands, retail and supply companies. Her past form includes designing for Kickers, M&S, Carvela, Monsoon, Debenhams & Tesco.
After a move to Sheffield at 30, two children in quick succession and losing a freelance job in a re-shuffle whilst on maternity leave it became apparent to Catherine that the only way to ensure job stability was to get on with starting that project she’d always been threatening to.
The brand was created out of a need to work, to gain a happy personal work -life balance and to bring an additional income into the family. It was to be a ‘job’ with regulated working times to fit in with regular childcare, close to home, which was more reliable than an occasional high-pressure freelance project. And of course, because it’s nice to do something creative which other people pat you on the back for….
Poco Nido has been formed on a shoe-string budget, with an award winning website built on family favours, adverts & shipping being funded by an extra freelance job and generally a great deal of hard work.
The contemporary illustration is the antithesis of the traditional leather applique, to offer modern parents a wider choice, to match their own style. Kids clothing is moving on, Danish and Scandinavian design heralding a new era, it’s time for a rethink on baby shoes….
Poco Nido is in its infancy but the love and support shown so far hints at a great future.
We’re so pleased Poco Nido have joined the team at DaisychainBaby and I know they’ll fit right in. Each pair comes in 0-6 months, 6-12 months and 12-18 months, wrapped in beautiful paper inside a perfect crafty tube. More designs will be with us in early autumn so watch this space. In the meantime, for 10% off your shoe order until end of July, quote POCONIDO at checkout.
